One of the loves of my life is my cats. Yes, I'm the crazy cat lady. I have been involved in the cat fancy since about 2002 showing my Persian cats in Premiership (a division for spays and neuters.) In 2004, my dilute calico Persian, Dixie, won a National Title as Sixth Best Cat in Premiership. She was an absolutely beautiful cat and beloved member of our family. Sadly, she passed away at 12 years old and left us with only memories.
One of the things I wanted to do in glass was to learn how to paint on glass using enamel pigments. I came up with the idea of painting Dixie as a guardian angel. The following images describe the process I used to create Guardian Dixie. Guardian Dixie is a framed fused glass enamel painting on art glass.
This is Dixie, she is a dilute calico Persian. Calico cats are red, black, and white. Dilute calico cats are the opposite of the dominate colors, instead of red, you have cream, instead of black you have blue, and the last color is the same in both which is white. Most dilute calico Persians have copper eyes. Dixie's eyes are like copper pennies.
The first thing I did was start sketching. In my sketch you can see all my guidelines and changes. The good thing about making cutouts in glass is you only have to draw half because the other half can be mirrored.
Once I had the sketch completed, I created cardstock cutouts of the pieces I would need trace on to the glass. I ended up not needed all the pieces, I used only the body back and the wings for Guardian Dixie.
Once I had the cutouts I started practicing painting on paper. I tried out colors styles shapes, shading.
This image shows Guardian Dixie in the kiln covered with clear glass powder.
Here is the piece after fusing and annealing. You can see that the powder has melted to clear revealing the fused glass cat underneath.
